As the wire feeds through the welding gun, an electric arc forms between the wire and the workpiece, melting both and creating a strong joint. A shielding gas, usually argon or a mix of argon and carbon dioxide, is used to protect the weld from atmospheric contamination.

TIG welding, short for Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. Unlike MIG, TIG welding typically requires a separate filler rod, which the welder feeds into the weld pool manually. The process also uses a shielding gas—usually pure argon—to keep contaminants at bay.

Ease of Use – One of the biggest differences between MIG and TIG welding lies in their ease of use. MIG welding is generally considered easier to learn, especially for beginners. It’s often referred to as the “point-and-shoot” method. With minimal training, a novice can produce strong, consistent welds on thicker materials.
